Student Learning Objective:

  • Students will be able to use previous material, i.e. greetings, the verb "ser," and description words, in conjunction with subject pronouns.

  • Students will be able to identify and use subject pronouns in Spanish.

  • Students will be able to define and identify verbs in Spanish.

¿Pa qué esperas? / Daily Warm-Up

Primero, ustedes necesitan conjugar el verbo "ser" (to be) con todos los pronombres sujetos de lección 1. Por ejemplo: en la primera caja, voy a escribir "yo soy." Por favor, escriben los diez formas (all 10! if you need help remembering them all, ask a question in the discussion forum or email me) de ser y todos de los pronombres sujetos en sus diarios de Google. Escribenlos en la caja que usamos para los verbos. Por ejemplo, aquí:

Before you get started, here are some questions to think about on your own. Please write your answers to these questions in your Google Journal. We will discuss these questions together in class:

1. What is a verb? What does a verb tell us?

2. How do you identify a verb in English?

3. What is an infinitive in English? How do we know if it is an infinitive?

4. What is an infinitive in Spanish--can you give an example? How do we know that it is an infinitive?

5. Have we seen verbs in Spanish already this year? If so, what verbs can you think of?

6. How can we identify verbs in Spanish? What clues help us determine if a word is a verb or not?

Los Verbos

For this lesson, please complete the following steps:

LEARN

YouTube video: What is an infinitive? What does it mean to conjugate a verb?

  • Please watch this YouTube video.

    • This will give you an overview of what an infinitive verb is in both English and Spanish, as well as what it means to conjugate a verb in English and Spanish.

  • Please focus on listening to the areas where he specifically addresses "infinitives" and "conjugations."

  • Once you are finished watching this video, in your online journals, please write down the presenter's definition of "infinitive" and "conjugation." You will need to use these definitions later on in our lesson.

  • You do not have to keep this Screencast but please feel free to save it to your class folder and go through it as many times as needed.

  • Please feel free to save this to your class folder as well.

Supplemental YouTube video:

  • This video focuses on conjugating verbs.

  • Although this video focuses on -AR verbs which we won't be addressing until the next lesson, it does give you a great example of how to properly conjugate verbs.

  • In your online journal, please write down at least TWO of the verbs (only the infinitives!) that they conjugate in this video.

ENGAGE

Partner Activity/Assessment:

Part 1:

  • For this task, you will need to download the PDF below, La Academia de Hogwarts.

    • You are to read through page 1 at least twice before beginning the activities.

  • Before you answer the questions on page 2, I would like you to write down all of the verbs that you can find on page 1. Please write these verbs down in your online journal under the appropriate section. You will use the above videos, as well as the box of verbs at the top of page 1, to help you identify which verbs to write down in your list.

  • Once you have written down your list of verbs, you may then answer the questions on page 2.

  • You must have this completed before our next face-to-face class meeting. Please mark any areas that you have questions on so that we can address these together in class.

Part 2:

  • For this task, you will be working with a partner.

    • The pairs are set up by student number: student 001 will work with student 002, student 003 will work with student 004, student 005 will work with student 006, etc.

    • If you have any questions about who your partner is, please email me as soon as possible or leave a comment in the comment section below.

  • The partner whose student number is EVEN (oo2, oo4, oo6, oo8, 010, etc.) will create a Google Doc that will be labeled "Last Name and Last Name_Spanish1_HarryPotterVerbs."

    • For example: "Smith and Doe_Spanish1_HarryPotterVerbs."

    • You will need to share this document with me as well.

  • First, I would like you each to copy and paste your definitions of "infinitive" and "conjugation" (that you wrote down after watching the first YouTube video) into the shared Google Doc.

    • This way, you can see what your partner took away from the video and compare your definitions--maybe they are the same or maybe they are different.

    • If you have different definitions, make sure you ask your partner how they came to that conclusion by adding a comment to what they wrote.

  • Next, I would like each of you to copy and paste your list of verbs that you wrote down into this new document. I would also like you to put your name above your list (make sure you COPY your list and don't CUT it! You must keep the list in your personal journal as well!)

  • Once you have each copied your lists into the new document, I would like you to create a master list that contains the verbs that you BOTH had written down.

  • If there are verbs that were only included in one list, add a comment and ask your partner why they included that word--how did they know it was a verb? If you disagree with them and don't believe it is a verb, add a comment politely explaining why.

    • Therefore, you should both be adding comments to each other's lists asking questions or explaining why you disagree with them.

  • This must be completed before our next face-to-face meeting.

Post in the Comments

  • You will need to use the comments section below for this last part of your assignment. Please write these in your online journal as well as a backup copy.

  • Using your subject pronouns, and your previous knowledge of the verbs that we have already covered this year (i.e. Ser, Estar, Tener, Querer, Gustar, etc.) you will need to:

    • Write TWO phrases in the comments section using the following format: Subject Pronoun + Correct form of the verb.

    • For example: Ella es. Nosotros tenemos. Yo quiero. Ustedes están.

    • You may not use the exact above examples for your two entries, but please use those examples to help you write your own TWO sentences in the comments section below.

    • You also need to write out the subject pronouns below your sentences along with their English translation so I, and your peers, can identify the subject pronouns easily: Yo = I, Ella = She, Ustedes = You all. In addition, please write out what the entire phrase means as well so we can properly identify the correct use of the verb.

    • This is how your post should look:

      • Sentences:

        • Ella es.

        • Nosotros tenemos.

      • Subject Pronouns:

        • Ella = She

        • Nosotros = We

      • Meaning:

        • Ella es = She is

        • Nosotros tenemos = We have

    • If you have any questions or need help with writing your sentences, please post that in the comments section below as well.

Please email me at LEarnest@orangecountyprep.com if you have any questions or feel free to post questions in the comments section below!
